Hawaii, Oslo - February 23 & 25
Norway, 2004 - 125 min. No MPAA Rating
Language: Norwegian
Director Erik Poppe brings
together five stories, creating a patchwork that is both complex and
rewarding. The film chronicles the stories of a worker in a mental
health institution, a convict and his brother, a suicidal woman, and a
new father with a terminally ill baby. The drama of each story captures
the audience. The promise that the stories are somehow related adds
suspense that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Gifted
performances and inspired visual material make it clear why Hawaii, Oslo
was selected as Norway's entry in the 2004 Academy Awards and is
considered one of Norway's best films in years.

Presented by Bob Singer. After
retiring from his practice as a Neurosurgeon, Bob Singer began exploring
the world. He started as the base camp physician for the 1988 Northwest
Everest Expedition that put the first two American women on the summit.
Since then, he has climbed countless summits spanning the globe. Most
recently, he completed a hike along the Inca Trail in South America.
Tonight he will guide us along
his trek, showing possible connections to other civilizations in other
parts of the world. Beginning in Cusco at the Plaza de Armas (the
ancient markets) and the remains of a great Inca city, the Inca trail
leads through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. Along the way, we will
explore unique ecological zones such as a jungle, as well as natural
tunnels, river valleys, and a glacier.
After descending 2000 steps cut
into indigenous rock, we pass through Intipunku (the Sun’s Gate) and see
Machu Picchu just as Hiram Bingham did in 1911 when he found the city
ruins. We’ll explore the magical remains of this city through the
pictures and anecdotes from along the Inca Trail. Offered by the County
of Henrico Division of Recreation & Parks.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror
(dir: F. W. Murnau,
1922, 93 mins., Germany)
An
unauthorized rendition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Murnau’s
Nosferatu might be the quintessential vampire tale. Here Graf Orleck
(played by the notorious Max Schreck who was reputed to have beena
vampire himself!), is not the slick, debonair icon of Hollywood and Bela
Lugosi (or even George Hamilton), but a fiendish, earthy, repulsive
creature with oversized ears and taloned fingers. Unlike most German
Expressionist films, Nosferatu was largely shot on location and
its landscapes, villages and castle were filmed in the Carpathian
mountains. Other German directors, like Fritz Lang or Ernst Lubitsch
built entire forests and towns in the studio. Murnau would later direct
the acclaimed The Last Laugh/Der Letzte Mann (’24) and
Sunrise (’28)
before his untimely death in a car crash in 1929.
Silent with score.
March 3
The Phantom of the Opera
