Partners in music and life for nearly three decades, the dynamic duo of Eddie and Martha Adcock has become known as “the biggest little band in Bluegrass”.

Award-winners and multi-Grammy finalists, this lively team of two are called “stellar musicians and vocalists” by 'Cashbox' Magazine; and 'Billboard' names them “one of the Bluegrass circuit's top acts” because of their dazzling delivery.

Audience favorites dubbed “the Sonny and Cher of Bluegrass”, they enjoy taking their warm and witty high-energy show everywhere from family-style bluegrass festivals to the Kennedy Center, from sea cruises to the Hot Club of France, venues as cross-cultural as their music and their appeal.

Eddie and Martha feature their own original songs and instrumentals, showcasing their strong, expressive duet, and somehow sounding like much more than two. “A tremendous show...You will be entertained; you will be amazed; you will be impressed,” says 'Banjo Newsletter'. 'Inside Bluegrass' describes “Progressive bluegrass that spellbound the audience. Exceptional music. Sterling vocal arrangements. This concert was memorable because of the balance between front-work and hot music.”

Featuring the Ron McCurdy Quartet and Dr. Diane Richardson, spoken word artist

The Langston Hughes Project performs a multimedia display of Langston Hughes, his life, his art, and his times via Jazz Quartet, Spoken Word, and Harlem Renaissance Images.

"Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz" is an 800-line suite of poems written by Hughes. A researcher, Dr. John Wright, noted that it contained suggestions that it be interspersed with musical interludes; yet such music had not been composed. He and jazz artist Dr. McCurdy then partnered to create a multi-media performance of spoken word, videography from the Harlem Renaissance, and live jazz quartet. The presentation recreates Langston Hughes` vision of the global struggle for freedom in the early 1960s and is now performed by McCurdy`s jazz quartet and spoken-word artist Dr. Diane Richardson.

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, the Villebillies are the latest in a now rich lineage of credible artists from the south.  A mighty crew numbering ten in all, they stand as a testament to the power of male camaraderie and the binding cohesiveness of great music. Ignoring genre boundaries the Villebillies playfully cross-pollinate country and pop, hip hop and southern whiskey rock, and what's more they're clearly having a ball doing it - as their hometown live shows have proved attracting a diverse yet dedicated fan base.

The Villebillies are a 21st century kind of phenomenon, infusing traditional instruments and backwater blues with a fresh and contemporary musical vision. That collective vision comes from an unorthodox culmination of two bands, the original line-up of the Villebillies, and local rock band Plan of Man, who both formed over a period of time through a variety of associations, an assembly of old childhood friends and acquaintances -- they now stand together as an unbreakable posse with a desire to make catchy, life-affirming records that reflect their personalities.

And that they do with aplomb, writing about experiences we can all relate to at some time in our lives: relationship problems, families, death and disease, partying, having no cash, and being positive. They're irreverent, funny and capable of relating your experiences to you with a deft touch that few can lay claim to.

VCU Jazz welcomes Ayman Fanous (bouzoukee & guitar) and Tomas Ulrich (cello) Friday March 2 to the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts. $10, $7 with VCU Student or MCV Housestaff ID. 922 Park Ave. 804-828-1169. http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/artweb/music/concerts/index.html.

Fanous and Ulrich met while both were playing in Simon Shaheen`s Near East Music Ensemble and quickly realized they had a mutual love of free improvisation. Middle Eastern classical music provided a common point of reference, given flamenco`s Arabic roots, Fanous` Egyptian origins, and Ulrich`s discovery of a more profound musical emotionality in this repertoire. They soon began giving regular performances of duo improvisation. The chemistry was immediately evident, as two unique combinations of collective musical memory ran against one another, collided, and embraced.

The cello`s dark-wood tones provided a warm and anguished mooring for the guitar`s searching, restless arpeggios. Flurries of violent rasguedos from the guitar fueled impassioned single-note lines from the cello. The duo has performed at several venues in New York, including the Knitting Factory and the Stone. They have mostly remained under the radar, however, preferring to enrich and deepen their unique improvisational language as it is nourished by a constant stream of unconscious material, away from the harsh glare of commercial and critical pressures. However, they have recently completed work on their first CD; and this unique and authentic musical expression will soon be available to the listening public.

Cellist-composer Tomas Ulrich received music degrees from Boston University and the Manhattan School of Music. Jazz Now has characterized him as "the total package: incredible chops, great imagination, and superb pitch. He fulfills the roles of bassist, guitarist, and additional horn player and is endlessly talented and creative."

Guitarist Ayman Fanous has developed a unique voice that synthesizes ancient and modern traditions. With a basis in flamenco and classical guitar techniques, he has explored the interface of these approaches with modern free improvisation. In addition, he reaches back into his Egyptian ancestry in improvisations on the bouzoukee.

Louis Ledford & Robert Blake perform a night of American folk music at Millie’s Diner Sun., March 4 at 9:30pm. All ages. $5; includes family style meal. 2603 E. Main St.

Here’s a review of Louis Ledford’s album, “Reverie”:

‘Reverie’ is a striking album in many ways, and throughout its 48 minutes it proves to be one of best examples of contemporary American folk music that we’ve heard over the past year or so.

The simplicity of the arrangements contrast perfectly with the intensity of the lyrics and vocal delivery, and this combination engages the listener from the opening strains of ‘All of My Dreams/Most of the Time’ right through to the final moments of the moving ‘September’.

Backed by acoustic and traditional country instrumentation, Ledford delivers songs that cover a wide range of subjects from tales of the Civil War (‘Belle Isle’), stories of urban frustration, anger and ultimately murder (‘Lately’) through to a tender recollection of a show he performed in New York in September 2001.

Beautifully written and performed ‘Reverie’ is a delicate and subtle album full of depth and intelligence – very highly recommended.
