Noble Silver: The
Jerome and Rita Gans Collection of English Silver opens at the Virginia Museum
Wednesday, February 28. 804.340.1405
The exhibit presents outstanding pieces
made by the greatest silversmiths of the 18th and 19th centuries, most notably
Paul de Lamerie and Paul Storr, and commissioned by the renowned silver retailer
Robert Garrard.
An exciting addition of 16 pieces,
recently given to the museum by Mrs. Gans, will also be installed in the new
gallery, which will present the Gans silver in an entirely new light. The gift
extends the chronological range of the collection and secures VMFA’s position as
a destination for the study and appreciation of English silver, according to
Ellenor M. Alcorn, VMFA’s Consulting Curator for the Gans Collection.
The collection, now numbering 103
objects, was formed by New Yorkers Jerome and Rita Gans between the mid 1960s
and the mid 1990s. The couple lent it to the museum in 1988, and Mrs. Gans gave
the collection to VMFA in 1996 following her husband’s death.

2008 is the 30th anniversary of the Martin Scorsese film,
The Last Waltz, which commemorates the history and music of The Band. THE LAST
WALTZ ENSEMBLE, from Atlanta Georgia, is a fitting celebration of the vibe,
energy and music of The Band; one of the world’s most popular, influential and
significant rock groups.
“As the evening went on, I realized that
the degree of separation between these guys and the original Band was minimal;
they were all just people interacting through their individual and collective
love of performing great, timeless music. It's a palpable feeling during the
group hug that is "I Shall Be Released,” For this and the show-stopping,
verse-trading closer, "The Weight," there ain't a voice not lifted or a smile
not found. I walked out of that place humming, and I'm sure I wasn't the only
one in the capacity crowd at the Georgia Theatre that kept that good feeling for
the rest of the weekend. “ - Harry McNeil/Jambase.com
The Tom
Principato Band plays Shenanigan’s Sunday, March 4 at 7pm. $5. 4017
MacArthur Ave. 804-264-5010.
http://www.greenpub.com
www.tomprincipato.com
Tom Principato is one of the most unique guitarists around,
combining his rich blues background with high-energy rock, and a highly charged,
emotionally expressive delivery.
"Recorded long before Hurricane Katrina
tore up half the Gulf Coast, "Guitar Gumbo" is Tom Principato's love song to
Louisiana, a multi-track celebration of its culture, mystique and allure.
As always, Principato's Fender-charged
fretwork generates lots of Stratocaster sparks and Telecaster twang, along with
some fiendishly syncopated runs on Professor Longhair's "hey Now Baby" and other
tracks.
As the album's title suggests, though,
not all the tunes evoke Louisiana. "Tango'd Up in the Blues," one of
Principato's most sensuous and atmospheric compositions, points even farther
south, and David Kitchen's "If Love Is Blind" introduces a roots-rock,
boogie-powered diversion. Not to be overlooked is "Tipsy," the album's coda,
which reverberates with Chuck Berry-flavored bends and double stops." — Mike
Joyce, The Washington Post 2005

“The buzz surrounding this show is
largely well-deserved, thanks to supremely clever and nimble staging, and the
infallible charm of NWC’s three leading men…” —LA Weekly
SPEAK Theater Arts presents dangerously
compelling original works of populist theater with enough laughs to ease the
sting of their social commentary—while bringing divergent audiences to a much
needed point of convergence. The flagship production of SPEAK Theater Arts,
N*W*C: The Race Show, is a daring and hilarious look at the impact three
racial slurs have had on the lives of three friends, each from a different
ethnic background. Ensemble and monologue work are seamlessly woven together
with slam poetry, stand-up comedy and hip-hop elements. The result is a
constantly transforming, highly engaging, exceedingly accessible work with a
powerful mission. Don’t miss this fast-paced, in your face, interdisciplinary
performance. Note: This show contains adult language.
